LOOKING FOR LEADERSHIP
I will be in Washington, D.C., the week of April 7 with 60 Health Care UST MBA students. This is my 19th D.C. seminar for our 19thUST MBA cohort, which keeps getting larger each year. We have a health policy seminar faculty of 28 this year, all experienced Washington hands from Congress and the Executive branch and all the influences thereon. We are fortunate to always strike a balance among the experienced and … Continue reading »

The Institute of Medicine provides a helpful way of understanding the role of doctor-patient relationships in maintaining or restoring our health. The national health policy support for this relationship has a foundation in Obamacare. And demonstrates how non-partisan this new law is and how much it reflects our values as Americans.

It’s been nearly 40 years since the Citizens League of Minneapolis-St.Paul began its effort to reform education through principles of greater involvement of teachers and students in reforming schools within public education. It is 20 years since the Charter Schools legislation I authored with Sen Joe Lieberman (D-CT) was passed and implementing legislation made it into law in Minnesota. The people who have guided this innovative ship have been hard at work in Education Evolving … Continue reading »

The Sharp healthcare system based in San Diego is participating in both a private and public accountable care initiative. In this month’s “What the Experts Say” column, Dr. John Jenrette, CEO of Sharp Community Medical Group and Chairman of the Board, California Association of Physician Groups, is optimistic in his view that this time of reform is the right time for innovation and focuses his commentary on two areas in urgent need of good solutions.

Robert Samuelson explains what the experts are thinking about the ability of the American economy to generate jobs in the next four years. I am, at best, a political economist with a couple predictions. First, there are already more than 3 million American jobs available and no qualified American applicants. We are most likely in a new economy, as yet undefined, which is more dependent on educating a new workforce and building new trust in … Continue reading »

Have you noticed the increasing frequency with which reputable surgeons are questioning the effectiveness (not cost effectiveness) of new medical devices? I read about it every week in the Journal or the Times. The themes are the same: FDA has approved the safety and efficacy of a new product (meaning it does what it’s makers claim it does), but there are no clinical studies proving for how long it works nor whether it is more … Continue reading »

By improving the health care services and goods we Americans receive. Quantity we’ve got. Quality we presume because our prices are so much higher for the same goods and services than in other countries.
They are not, says the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in its latest report BEST CARE AT LOWER COST

A: Each understands just enough about health care, health policy and health reform to be capable of agreeing on how best to reform and implement Obamacare. They also know from experience you can’t get it right unless you are willing to provide the political leadership essential to ridding health reform of its disabling political partisanship.
Much is made on the right of Paul Ryan speeches on consumer directed health care, private Medicare, and repeal of Obamacare. … Continue reading »
