Republican Repeal and Replace

The Republican  House Appropriations Committee approved FY 2012 spending for the Agriculture Dept with a prohibition against the enforcement of  the first new nutritional standards for school breakfasts and lunches, asserting the improved food nutrition requirtements will cost taxpayers $ billion over five years.  And they voted a bunch of exemptions including grocery stores from having to display calorie content on foods.  Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT), who is battling incumbent Senator John Tester (D-MT) for his seat in the Senate next year, succeeded in an amendment to prohibit the FDA from restricting any susbstanc e unless it “caused greater harm to health than a product not containing the substance.”  This to exempt menthol cigarettes from any regulation (see Greensboro Story, June 7, 2011).
