Medicare Proposal
Congressional Republicans propose to privatize Medicare and convert the social insurance for which people pay taxes out of current income into a congressional subsidy known as premium support for the vouchered amount per Medicare plan. Republicans also want to convert Medicaid into a block grant to the states before further expansion of health insurance coverage can be implemented. Public reaction to the Medicare proposal seems to have discouraged its supporters. It is likely that further efforts to reduce spending on low income and disabled beneficiaries of Medicaid is the next step. So this analysis by the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, on which I sit, may be informative.
